The Oxford Philosophy, Law, and Politics (PLP) Colloquium is an interdisciplinary colloquium series that brings together theorists from philosophy, law, politics, and beyond to discuss works-in-progress by distinguished scholars.

Imani Perry is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University. She is the author of 6 books, including Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry. Perry is a scholar of law, literary and cultural studies, and an author of creative nonfiction. Her writing and scholarship primarily focuses on the history of Black thought, art, and imagination crafted in response to, and resistance against, the social, political and legal realities of domination in the West. She seeks to understand the processes of retrenchment after moments of social progress, and how freedom dreams are nevertheless sustained.

An informal paper by Prof. Perry will be circulated in advance to registrants. The paper outlines Prof. Perry’s concept of African American narrative jurisprudence, the subject of her forthcoming book. The paper then moves into a more detailed sketch of a chapter in progress on a Black feminist thread of this tradition.

Those attending may also wish to read the introduction to Prof. Perry’s book ‘Vexy Thing: On Gender and Liberation’. Those unable to read these materials in advance are nevertheless welcome to attend as a summary will be given.
