Origins of Insipration
Join Linda Davies, St Edmund Hall’s Writer in Residence, and Paul Matthews, Fellow of St Edmund Hall and neuroscientist, as they discuss this most nebulous, and yet perhaps most important, of creative moments. The origins of inspiration have proved hugely difficult to examine using standard neuroscientific tools, not least because the harder we try to summon inspiration the less likely it is to respond. Artists through the centuries have courted the Muses in a variety of different ways, but are there effective methods to increase our inspiration? And if so, why might they work?
