Inbreeding and inbreeding avoidance in a population wiht severe inbreeding depression

Inbreeding depression is frequently thought of as the ultimate driver of aspects of vertebrate mating systems such as dispersal. But recent theoretical and empirical studies suggest inbreeding avoidance may only be favoured under rather limited conditions. I will describe recent analyses on the individually-monitored red deer population on the Isle of Rum, which experiences strong inbreeding depression, addressing these issues.
