Insider Imitation
We study how regulating data usage can impact innovation. Digital platforms commonly use market data generated by third-party seller activity to decide which market segments to enter with direct product offerings. We find that a ban on data usage stimulates innovation for ``experimental’‘ product categories with significant upside demand potential, but stifles it otherwise. Our results contribute to an ongoing policy discussion regarding data usage in digital markets.
