LAC Main Seminar Series: Social Movements in Latin America: Where Are We and Where Are We Going?
Federico M. Rossi holds a PhD from the European University Institute (Florence). He is a Ramón y Cajal Research-Professor at the Department of Sociology II of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Madrid and formerly Humboldt Senior Fellow at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg. Currently on sabbatical as a Senior Research-Professor from the CONICET-UNSAM in Buenos Aires.
He is working on the political economy of social movements, the analysis of social movement strategies inside and outside parliaments, and a comparative analysis of protests in capital cities.
Rossi has published several books in English and Spanish. In his book The Poor’s Struggle for Political Incorporation (Cambridge University Press) he proposes a theory to analyze the search for incorporation of the popular sectors as citizens and wage earners. This book opened a new debate on the analysis of the political economy of Latin America, originating the co-edited volume Reshaping the Political Arena in Latin America (University of Pittsburgh Press) to apply his thesis of the second wave of incorporation in Latin America.
In Spanish, he is the author of Democracia y movimientos sociales (INE Mexico) and La participación de las juventudes hoy (Prometeo Editorial).
Rossi edited the two most comprehensive volumes of the Latin American production on social movement studies: The Oxford Handbook of Latin American Social Movements (Oxford University Press), and Social Movement Dynamics (Routledge). In addition, he is advisory editor of The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of Social and Political Movements (Wiley).
As an expert he has been interviewed by different media outlets and has delivered speeches at the United Nations Commission for Social Development, the Euro-Latin American Assembly of the European Parliament, the Panel of Eminent Persons on United Nations-Civil Society Relations, and the National Electoral Institute of Mexico, among others.
