Principal's Conversation with James Bobin
This year’s Frankland Visitor to Brasenose is James Bobin (BNC Modern History 1990). James is a multi-award-winning writer, film director, and producer. He has worked on some very well-known and influential projects, and this is an incredible opportunity to pick the brains of someone who has carved out a stellar career in the film and television industries. This year’s Frankland Visitor, James Bobin, has combined his talents as a writer, director, and producer to create and shape some memorable and groundbreaking projects in recent decades. He is currently directing the third season of PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS for Disney+. He was nominated for a DGA award and has won two Children’s & Family Emmys for his work as director on the pilot and second episode of the series’ first season.

Previously, James served as director and executive producer on THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY for Disney+ for which he also won a Children’s & Family Emmy.

He is well-known for resurrecting the Muppets franchise, directing THE MUPPETS starring Amy Adams and Jason Segel, which was an international sensation that won an Oscar for Best Original Song and spurred a sequel, MUPPETS MOST WANTED, which he also directed. James’ ability to navigate different genres is further exemplified in his direction with Johnny Depp, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter in ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS for Joe Roth and Disney. The combined worldwide box office of his work is almost a billion dollars.

In television, he was the driving force behind DA ALI G SHOW, where he served as writer, director, and producer for every episode and helped create the iconic characters of Ali G, Borat, and Bruno. He co-created the HBO show, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS with Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, where he took on multiple roles, running the show while also contributing as a producer, writer, and director. FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS and DA ALI G SHOW garnered him 11 Emmy nominations.
