Ethox: Oxford Global Health and Bioethics International Conference: 17th - 18th July 2017
The Ethox Centre is pleased to announce the call for papers for the second biennial Oxford Global Health and Bioethics International Conference. The conference will be held from 17th – 18th July 2017 at Keble College, University of Oxford.

Conference Focus

The ethical issues involved in the practice of Global Health initiatives and research are increasingly the subject of public and scholarly debate. These discussions have, however, tended to be dominated by a focus on particular diseases or interventions in certain locations and often with specific views of what constitutes ethics. Debate has also tended to be limited by insufficient engagement between different disciplinary approaches to this subject.

The Oxford Global Health and Bioethics International Conference takes place every two years and addresses critically important ethical issues in the conception and implementation of Global Health. It aims to foster comprehensive multi-disciplinary debate moving beyond the parameters of disease, interventions and locations to attend to and engage with the many over-arching ethical concerns which characterise Global Health policy, practice and research.
Conference Themes

We are now inviting proposals for paper presentations, posters, or workshop sessions addressing the ethical aspects of global health. The conference themes include, but are not limited to, the ethical issues involved in the following topics:
Emergencies

Practical ethical issues in public health emergencies
The ethics of research collaboration in emergencies
Ethical issues for front line research staff

Engagements

What does it mean to participate/engage/volunteer and be involved in global health?
Implications of these different types of engagements

Technologies

The use of new and existing forms of technologies in the conduct of global health
Mapping, tracking and Big Data

Borders/geography

Migration
Collective regional and global responsibilities
Geographical factors in research ethics

Vulnerability

The value and limits of the concept of vulnerability
Vulnerability and agency
Research with ‘vulnerable groups’

Sharing

Data sharing
The sharing of samples
Biobanking in low-income settings

Proposal ideas that extend beyond these thematic areas will also be considered.

Information about how to submit your abstract will be posted here soon
One-day workshop proposals

We are inviting proposals for a small, focussed workshop on Wednesday 19th July 2017 for approximately 20-25 invited participants. The workshop should complement and develop at least one of the conference themes, providing an opportunity to explore an issue related to Global Health Ethics in greater depth.

The costs of accommodation and subsistence for the extra day and night for all workshop participants will be covered. In addition to this, if necessary, funding would be available to cover travel costs for any speakers who might be travelling especially for the workshop. However, we would expect that the majority of workshop speakers/participants will already be attending the conference, and therefore their travel expenses will not fall under the remit of the workshop.

If you have any queries or would like to discuss your workshop proposal, please email conference@ethox.ox.ac.uk or telephone 01865 287887.

If you would like to apply for the opportunity to conduct the one-day workshop on 19th July, please email your proposal to conference@ethox.ox.ac.uk, marked ‘workshop proposal’, by 13th Feb 2017.
