Overcoming the Oppressors
Overcoming the Oppressors: White and Black in Southern Africa by Robert I. Rotberg explores southern Africa’s complex struggle against oppressive actors, drawing from the author’s long experience and extensive engagement with the continent over decades.

For the launch of this new book published by Oxford University Press, Professor Robert I. Rotberg joins Minerva Global Security Programme Director Dr Annette Idler at the Blavatnik School to share insights from individual countries in the region, detailing the stages of the complicated fight for freedom against oppression in southern Africa.

Professor Robert I. Rotberg is President Emeritus of the World Peace Foundation and was the Founding Director of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Program on Intrastate Conflict. Previously, he was professor of political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, academic vice president of Tufts University, and president of Lafayette College. Professor Rotberg has authored books on Africa, Asia, Latin America, corruption, governance and failed states, and has now echoed Frantz Fanon in his latest book on contemporary southern Africa.Minerva Security Programme logo
