Emily Kadens: Fraud and the Problem of Trust in Early Modern English Commerce
This paper looks at the role of institutions in supporting commercial trust. Drawing on evidence from fraud cases in early modern English
equity courts, it explores whether occurrences of fraud were due to the failure of intermediary institutions or to the failure of victims to
employ the available safeguards against cheating. In the latter situation, the paper examines why the victims might have trusted blindly rather than trust institutions.
