OxTalks is Changing
OxTalks will soon move to the new Halo platform and will become 'Oxford Events.' There will be a need for an OxTalks freeze. This was previously planned for Friday 14th November – a new date will be shared as soon as it is available (full details will be available on the Staff Gateway).
In the meantime, the OxTalks site will remain active and events will continue to be published.

The Hat: an aperiodic monotile

This talk and panel discussion will celebrate the discovery of a single shape that completely covers an infinitely large flat surface without repeating.
The famous Penrose tiling is made of two elementary shapes, or tiles, and mathematicians have long wondered about the existence of a single tile that could tile the plane aperiodically. Earlier this year such a shape was discovered: the Hat!
For this public talk, organised in partnership with the Clay Mathematics Institute, Chaim Goodman-Strauss (National Museum of Mathematics/University of Arkansas), one of the authors of this new work, will give an overview of the Hat.
This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Craig Kaplan (University of Waterloo), Marjorie Senechal (Smith College) and Roger Penrose (University of Oxford) as well as Chaim Goodman-Strauss. The discussion will be chaired by Henna Koivusalo (University of Bristol).
