Detective stories - inside the criminal mind
St Edmund Hall’s Centre for the Creative Brain presents an evening of mystery and crime. Through the lens of crime writing, psychology and forensic psychiatry, we will explore what drives people to commit crime, the makeup of a criminal mind and why we are so fascinated by it.

Speakers:

G.M. Malliet is the Agatha Award-winning author of the acclaimed St Just mysteries, the Max Tudor mysteries and novel Weycombe. She is an alumnus of Jesus college (1987) and describes her mystery novels as ‘on the spectrum between cozy/traditional and twisty’. She is a 2020 Macavity Award Nominee and EQMM Reader’s Choice finalist.

Dr Julia Shaw is a psychological scientist (UCL) and a science communicator. Her work focuses on criminal psychology and areas of memory. She is the author of the internationally bestselling books ‘The Memory Illusion’ and ‘Evil: The Science Behind Humanity’s Dark Side’. She also hosts the BBC podcast ‘Bad People’ and regularly writes articles on criminal psychology for the BBC.

The event is free and open to all. We welcome undergraduates, postgraduates, artists, academics, scientists, performers and all curious people.
