Energy Seminar - Week 8: Organic Photovoltaics: Ubiquitous Solar Energy?

Summary: Organic Photovoltaics (OPV), is an emerging solar cell technology at the early stages of commercialisation. It has several advantages compared to silicon photovoltaics, the incumbent technology, like a much lower environmental footprint, light weight and mechanical flexibility for endless new applications as well as the potential to compete with silicon PV in cost. However, will this be enough? In this talk, Prof Riede will describe the current state of the art, highlight the potential of OPV and discuss what might be needed to enable the transformative potential of this technology.

Biography: Moritz Riede is the Professor of Soft Functional Nanomaterials in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford, UK. His academic research is focussed on advanced functional materials, in particular organic semiconductors for organic photovoltaics (OPV). Beyond OPV, his interests are renewable energies in general and tackling the corresponding challenges for transforming our energy system into a sustainable one.
