A joint conference hosted by the Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh on intellectual history from an institutional perspective.

Recent work in early modern intellectual history has highlighted the role of institutions and corporations in the shaping of early modern thought. This conference will highlight new research which explores how establishments such as schools, universities, societies, museums, or any other kind of corporation shaped the work of the individuals living and working within their environs. Our aim is to promote discussions in intellectual history which consider the concrete political, religious, social, and cultural environments within which individuals were grounded. What can we learn from situating an individual and their body of work according to the formal and informal structures of their institutional home?
