Life of Galileo

Challenging institutional power in pursuit of the truth, Brecht’s ‘Life of Galileo’ chronicles the scientist’s clash against religious doctrine, his wrongful imprisonment and his struggle towards recanting his discoveries.

A bid to make some extra cash becomes a dangerous collision with the Roman Catholic Church. Short of money, Galileo recreates the newly-invented telescope and passes it off as his own creation. What he sees through the device leads him to vocally support Copernicus’ model for the solar system- in which the planets orbit the sun – defying the teaching of the church and reframing the times’ scientific understanding.

Velvet Vest Productions reopens the Keble O’Reilly Theatre with an original translation of Galileo inspired by modern debates surrounding climate change.
