European history has been defined as a field by a notion of Europe – its borders, values, civilization and nationalities – that is structured by Christianity and its secular legacies. This lecture asks how thinking about the place of Jews and Muslims within the history of Europe transforms our understanding of the interface between Europe and the world, and challenges our understanding of what ‘Europe’ might mean.
Abigail Green is Professor of Modern European History at the University of Oxford. She is the author of Moses Montefiore: Jewish Liberator, Imperial Hero (2010) which was a TLS Book of the Year and a New Republic Best Book.
