Holocaust Memorial Day takes place each year on 27 January, commemorating the liberation of the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. On HMD, we remember the six million Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions who have been killed in Nazi persecution of other groups and in more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.
For Holocaust Memorial Day 2024, Magdalen College will host an event led by the College President, Dinah Rose KC, to reflect on the history, memory, and contemporary relevance of the Holocaust. We will welcome Laura Marks CBE, Chair of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and activist focussing on issues relating to faith and gender. Laura joined the board of HMDT in 2013 and became Chair of the trustees in 2016. She is founder of Mitzvah Day, a charity which brings people of different faiths together through social action, and now operates in over 20 countries. She also co-founded Nisa-Nashim, a national Muslim Jewish women’s network. In this event, the President will lead a conversation with Laura about Holocaust Memorial Day and her work with Jewish and interfaith communities in the UK.
