Turns in talk structure conversation and its imitation in writing, especially drama. They also structure thinking and the imitation of thinking in poetry. Taking a sestina by Sir Philip Sidney as proof text, this paper will explore the ways in which the dynamics of turn-taking, in shared and inner speech, interact both with the formal properties of poetry and with the turn of figuration.
