Mohammad-Mahmoud Ould Mohamedou is Professor of International History and Chair of the International History Department at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, and teaches as well at the Doctoral School at Sciences Po Paris. Previously, he was the Associate Director of the Harvard University Programme on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Deputy-Director and Academic Dean of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. He is the author of A Theory of ISIS (2017), Understanding Al Qaeda (2011) and Iraq and the Second Gulf War (2002), and co-editor of Democratisation in the 21st Century (2016). His research focuses on political violence and transnational terrorism, the transformation of warfare, political liberalisation and contemporary Middle Eastern sociopolitical developments. Widely published, Professor Mohamedou is regularly quoted in the world’s media for his expertise. Since 2014, he is a member of the Kofi Annan-appointed West Africa Commission on Drugs and, since 2017, serves on the United Nations High Level Panel on Migration. In May 2016, the New African magazine named him amongst the 50 Most Influential African Intellectuals and, in February 2018, amongst the 100 Africans of the Year.
