OxTalks will soon move to the new Halo platform and will become 'Oxford Events.' There will be a need for an OxTalks freeze. This was previously planned for Friday 14th November – a new date will be shared as soon as it is available (full details will be available on the Staff Gateway).
In the meantime, the OxTalks site will remain active and events will continue to be published.
If staff have any questions about the Oxford Events launch, please contact halo@digital.ox.ac.uk
Green Templeton College Vice-Principal Dr Rebecca Surender will introduce this year’s Astronomy For All Lecture, delivered by Associate Fellow Charles Barclay. This illustrated talk will highlight the pivotal and unsung role played by women in astronomy and astrophysics. It has been 100 years since the death of Henrietta Leavitt, the discoverer of the Period-Luminosity law for Cepheid variable stars, from which Edwin Hubble was able to measure the scale and expansion of the Universe. The talk will review the importance of Leavitt’s work and also single out three other women, whose 20th Century contributions, in their respective fields, have been critical to the development of the whole subject.
