About the speaker:
Hans Joachim Schellnhuber is one of the world’s leading climate scientists, founding director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and member of the German Government’s Advisory Council on Global Change. Amongst other positions, he currently leads the High-Level Panel of the European Decarbonisation Pathways Initiative of the European Commission, was Chief Government Advisor on climate and related issues during the German G8/EU twin presidency in 2007 and has served as a principal advisor to the European Commission President Barroso. Furthermore, he has been a long-standing member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
Professor Schellnhuber studied mathematics and physics in Regensburg and Oldenburg. In 1991, he was called upon to create the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and became its director in 1993, overseeing its growth to one of the world’s most renowned climate research institutes. In 2018, the Institute was ranked as the world’s most influential environmental think tank in the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Think Tank Report.
