The Bonavero Institute and Centre for Socio-Legal Studies are pleased to invite you to a screening of Judges Under Pressure, a powerful documentary about the fight for judicial independence in Poland and a panel discussion on judicial independence in Central Eastern Europe and beyond. The event will take place on Wednesday, 12 February, from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Bonavero Lecture Theatre, Mansfield College.
Set against the backdrop of Poland’s sweeping judicial reforms starting in 2015, Judges Under Pressure (trailer) highlights the courageous stand of independent judges like Igor Tuleya, shedding light on the human and political toll of defending the Constitution under government pressure and the solidarity of citizens united in protecting democracy.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Agnieszka Kubal and featuring Judge Igor Tuleya, a leading advocate for judicial independence and a central figure in the documentary; Iwona Harris, the film’s co-director and producer; Başak Çalı, Head of Research and Professor of International Law; and Konrad Ksiazek, a Law DPhil student.
The event is generously supported by a research project on Comparative Judicial Activism, based at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies and funded by the British Academy and the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights.
All are welcome to join.
