Do you only use 10% of your brain? Come join us for a delightful evening to discuss what the other 90% is there for!
The idea that you could unlock the full potential of your brain and gain superhuman skills, like perfect memory or telekinesis, is something that has fascinated film-makers for many years. This has been explored in movies like Limitless and Lucy, which caught the attention of audiences all around the world, but is there really such an untapped potential in all of us?
In this evening talk, Prof. Heidi Johansen-Berg, Fellow of St Edmund Hall, and Dr. Kaller will debunk the myth and talk about their research investigating the role of the 90% that gets overlooked: white matter. Previously seen only as an electric insulator, myelin has been shown to contribute to nervous system plasticity, as it is dynamically regulated by neuronal activity. Thus, myelin plasticity plays an important role in facilitating learning and recovery after brain damage.
Drinks will be served after the talks.
The event is free and open to all. We welcome undergraduates, postgraduates, parents, academics, scientists, cinephiles and all myth-busters.
The Centre for the Creative Brain is generously supported by St Edmund Hall and the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging, University of Oxford.
