Mozart’s classic reinvigorated by an exciting young company
The Oxford Alternative Orchestra at St John’s College invites you to a new production of Don Giovanni, a timeless classic reinvigorated with sharper satire and wartime wit.
When the lascivious Don Giovanni kills the father of an attempted conquest, the townsfolk pursue revenge with the aid of figures from his past. Reimagined in an Italian town during the latter stages of World War II, this production finds fresh and gritty depths to the explorations of liberty, status, and gender politics at the heart of Mozart’s opera.
The production breathes new life into iconic pieces, from the inimitable Overture to the seductive Là ci darem. Holden’s English translation provides a direct, biting libretto which heightens the irreverent comedy and macabre drama, updating the salient social commentary of Mozart’s work for today’s world.
Don Giovanni is brought to you by a company made up of current university and conservatoire students and recent graduates. The production is conducted by Hannah Schneider, who is fast building international renown in Russia and the US; directed by Jonny Danciger, the creative mind behind Candide (Oxford Playhouse), and accompanied by the orchestra that brought you sell-out productions of Eugene Onegin, La Traviata, and The Corridor.
