We will describe the isolation of mouse and human skeletal stem cells (SSCs) and how they are distinct from bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) lineages. We will then examine how SSCs interact with their local regulatory microenvironment or ‘niches’ and how these interactions could be adjusted to facilitate skeletal regeneration.
