This paper will explore the interplay between war and the environment in Henan Province, a hotly contested territory that endured massive ecological and human destruction as part of China’s conflict with Japan during World War II, revealing how efforts to procure and exploit nature’s energies in various forms shaped the choices of generals, the fates of communities, and the trajectory of environmental change in this part of North China.
