The Michaelmas seminar will take the form of a reading group dedicated to Edward Gibbon’s History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
Each meeting will take a different, currently under-explored aspect of the Decline and Fall as its theme, and will be led by a discussant. It is hoped that the sessions will interest not only historians, but also literary and classical scholars.
The group will take David Womersley’s Penguin abridgement (2000) as its set text. The seminar is able to supply copies of this edition to participants who can undertake to attend all the meetings, which will take place on Fridays in weeks 3, 4, 5, and 6.
We kindly request that those who are interested in taking part register by Friday of 1st week (12 October), by writing to either email@example.com or to firstname.lastname@example.org.
