Science and technology are often team efforts – research groups, start-ups and corporate R& D all use teams to move projects forward. Bringing a mixture of talents and personalities together can be extremely fruitful but can also cause friction. Understanding people’s team preferences, what motivates a team and some common pitfalls can be very helpful.

This course will cover:

• Your personal Belbin team profile
• The various Belbin team roles and how they work together
• Working as a team
• Motivating people
• Common team problems

Objectives: by the end of this session participants will be able to:

• Articulate their team role preferences
• Understand differences between team role types
• Think about working and thinking styles within a team
• Know something of what motivates people and keeps teams functioning well
• Apply this learning to their current research role

You will need to undertake an individual Belbin questionnaire and ask colleagues for some feedback to provide your team role profile. This will need to be completed before the course but will take less than 30 minutes. N.B. There is an initial deposit of £30 to cover the cost of applying this questionnaire, payable at the Divisional office when you have been accepted but fully refundable at the end of the course.
