The concept of autism has changed enormously, from narrow to wide, from rare to common, from discrete to dimensional, from unitary to ‘fractionated’, and from ‘pure’ to complex and comorbid. Taking a rather personal timeline, looking back over the past 30 years of autism research, I will discuss these changes in our understanding of autism, and their implications for future research.
