Dear members and supporters
Please join us for a climate change press/photo stunt we have organised at 9.40 am on Saturday 21st November on the steps of the Sheldonian on Broad Street. This is to publicise the People’s Climate March in London on 29th November which we hope you will be able to join, and to draw attention to the global Climate Change talks which will be held in Paris from 30th November – 11th December.
The theme of the press/photo stunt will be ‘Combat Climate Change because we CAN CAN CAN!’ and we will be dancing the Can Can. Please let us know either by replying to this email or by emailing us at email@example.com:
(a) whether you are planning to come, and if so
(b) whether or not you can bring your own Can Can outfit.
We suggest that people bring mid-length frilly skirts or frilly petticoats or tutus, a feather boa and garter and wear jeans and boots underneath. It would be really helpful if you can bring your own outfit but let us know if this won’t be possible and we’ll try and help – we’ll need plenty of warning, so please contact us by Monday 16th November at the latest.
The Paris climate talks are designed to get countries to agree on a binding international treaty on carbon emissions aimed at limiting global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees C above pre-industrial levels. This year average global temperatures have recorded a rise of 1 degree C for the first time, taking us halfway to the threshold that could result in dangerous climate change. We are already experiencing higher global temperatures, more extreme weather events like heatwaves and floods, melting ice, rising sea levels and increased acidity of the oceans. The Met Office said that research suggests it’s still possible to limit warming to 2 degrees C above pre-industrial levels, but the later global carbon emissions peak, the faster the subsequent emissions cuts would need to be. The People’s March on 29th November is to show politicians that we expect leadership and tough action to combat climate change at the Paris talks.
We look forward to seeing you on 21st November to publicise the march and the climate talks.
