During this time, there will be no facility to publish or edit events. The existing OxTalks site will remain available to view during this period. We study how regulating data usage can impact innovation. Digital platforms commonly use market data generated by third-party seller activity to decide which market segments to enter with direct product offerings. We find that a ban on data usage stimulates innovation for ``experimental’‘ product categories with significant upside demand potential, but stifles it otherwise. Our results contribute to an ongoing policy discussion regarding data usage in digital markets.
