About the speaker

Alice Horton is an ecotoxicologist with an expertise in microplastic pollution at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. Her research focusses particularly on the sources, fate and ecological effects of microplastics (plastic particles <5mm in size) within the freshwater environment. She has carried out and published studies identifying microplastics in UK rivers and freshwater fish, in addition to toxicological studies investigating the combined effects of microplastics and associated persistent organic chemicals, including pesticides and flame retardants. Additionally, her current research involves working alongside the water industry (UKWIR) to investigate the presence and fate of microplastics across the range of different water treatment processes, including wastewater and drinking water. Additionally, Alice is a NERC Knowledge Exchange Fellow funded to develop the UK Microplastics Network – an interdisciplinary network aimed at engaging stakeholders with the state-of-the-art academic research on microplastics, leading to improved cross-sector sharing of knowledge and better informed decision-making.
