The Oxford University Sudanese Society is proud to host Dr Harry Cross, author of Undoing a Revolution: Sudan and the Politics of Debt, for a critical discussion on how international finance has shaped and constrained Sudan’s path since independence.
Dr. Cross, a specialist in Sudan’s economic and financial systems, reveals how Western creditors have leveraged unpayable debts to extract policy concessions, devastate the economy, and erode Sudanese sovereignty.
From the 1970s credit boom to the 1980s debt crisis, from sanctions and isolation to the unravelling of the 2019 revolution, this talk explores how unequal global financial structures have repeatedly undermined Sudan’s efforts toward democracy and independence. Dr. Cross challenges Western misconceptions of Sudan as simply a failed state, instead revealing how structural Islamophobia and shifting geopolitical interests have been weaponized through debt and sanctions, transforming economic policy into a form of political control.
