In this presentation, I will provide an overview of adaptive testing—both at item level and at module level— and I will discuss the challenges & opportunities for the application of the adaptive algorithms to high-stakes assessments. I will discuss the issues related to item parameter estimation and comparability of test scores across administrations, as applied to both traditional and digital-first tests. I will illustrate the item-level adaptive digital-first test with the Duolingo English Test.
