OxTalks will soon move to the new Halo platform and will become 'Oxford Events.' There will be a need for an OxTalks freeze. This was previously planned for Friday 14th November – a new date will be shared as soon as it is available (full details will be available on the Staff Gateway).
In the meantime, the OxTalks site will remain active and events will continue to be published.
If staff have any questions about the Oxford Events launch, please contact halo@digital.ox.ac.uk
Jin-ho Chung will present a brief overview of the field research findings from the Climate Mobility, Onward Precarity, and Urban Environment (CEMENT) project. Jin-ho and his research team conducted field research in the Sidama Region and Gamo Zone in southern Ethiopia between January and April 2024. This region, already grappling with socio-economic challenges, faces added strain from frequent droughts, influencing the mobility of many young smallholder farmers towards urban centres in search of livelihoods as unskilled labourers.
The research team concentrated on two primary questions:
1. The extent to which drought influences family mobility decisions and the decision-making processes within these families.
2. Climate mobility patterns and their impact on the livelihoods of these families.
Jin-ho Chung is Researcher in Climate Mobility at the Transport Studies Unit (TSU) at the University of Oxford. He is currently leading the CEMENT project, supported by the UKRI ESRC New Investigator Grant.
