Transitional Leadership Insights from Afghanistan: Dr. Sima Samar,
State Minister for Human Rights and International Affairs; former Chairperson of the Independent Afghan Human Rights Commission; Vice President of the Interim Administration and Minister of Women’s Affairs in 2001-2002, during which she established Afghanistan’s first Ministry of Women’s Affairs.
A medical doctor from the oppressed Hazara minority group, she fled Afghanistan when her husband was ‘disappeared’ during the Russian occupation and became a refugee in Pakistan. She is the Founder of Shuhada, an NGO which runs 55 schools across Afghanistan and 3 for refugees in Pakistan, and which ran underground classes for girls in Kabul during the Taliban regime. She is the Laureate of the ‘Right Livelihood Award’ or ‘Alternative Nobel’ Prize, and innumerable other global awards for justice, human rights, peace and health, and has received two honorary doctorates from Brown University and University of Alberta.
