Camilla Toulmin will present findings from her longitudinal study of D’longuebougou, a mud village in central Mali, where she carried out her doctoral field-work 1980-82. Documenting the shifts in land use, people, climate and livelihoods over 35 years, she explores their combined impacts on food security and agricultural sustainability for the people of this region. The highly damaging impacts of irrigated sugar-cane are particularly of note.
